Arto Koivula occupational safety representative

Arto Koivula has worked at the Harjavalta plant since 1986 and as an occupational safety representative since 2000. His role has changed over the years from mere supervision of interests to an expert of the safety organisation.

Arto works full time as an occupational safety representative, although a full-time representative is not required by law in a company of this size. He feels that this is an excellent solution.

– Working as an occupational safety representative is a position of trust because the representative is selected through a staff ballot.  I want to be worthy of my colleagues’ confidence, and this is best achieved through interaction, Arto Koivula explains.

Koivula also develops workplace safety by representing the employees in decision-
making in occupational safety. The tasks of an occupational safety representative also include safety inspections, risk assessments, workplace evaluations and general supervision work.

– It has been a pleasure to notice how safety thinking has changed over the past ten years. Protective equipment is no longer worn under compulsion, but of own free will.
Occupational safety can never be over-emphasised. Preventive measures shared by all employees include recording of danger spots. All reports are investigated and faults are remedied as quickly as possible.

– It is important to remember that a company’s safety culture is based on people’s behaviour and attitudes and their way of implementing safety work, Koivula points out.
